It was only about ten o'clock in the morning when Carlotta stepped out onto Route 1. She headed down to the beach and looked out on the ocean excitedly. This was it. She'd finally begun her pokemon journey. She looked down at Squirtle happily, who smiled back up.
"Squirtle, why don't you head into the water and see if you can find a Krabby. Weaken it, though, and get it to shore - don't knock it out. I want to catch it. I'm going to take a swim, myself."
They both headed into the water and dove below. When she came up Carlotta sighed in satisfaction. The water was nice and cool despite the growing heat of the day, and it felt good. Then she saw a Krabby flying out of the water. She laughed as Squirtle battled it. Then she came out of the water and threw a pokeball at it. It was trapped inside and fell to the ground. It wriggled a bit - and then a bit more...and then, at last, it was caught! She had her first pokemon!
"Yes! This day is looking good already!"
Retrieving her new pokemon and congratulating her Squirtle, she walked her bike along the path to see if she could find some good pokemon to fight...

As the two were walking, they came across a Pidgey scrounging for bugs. There was a Caterpie nearby, and the Pidgey noticed it just as Carlotta silently ordered Squirtle to tackle the Pidgey. Squirtle nodded and rushed forward silently. Just as Pidgey was about to take off, Squirtle tackled the pokemon and it went flying with a squawk. As it was getting up, Squirtle tackled it again. Then she tackled the Pidgey a third time - and finished it off with a fourth Tackle attack. Squirtle grinned up at Carlotta and Carlotta grinned back as she nodded to the Caterpie. Squirtle nodded happily. It was a twofer. The Caterpie squealed as Squirtle came for it, but Squirtle tackled it before it had a chance to use its infamous String Shot attack. Then Squirtle tackled it again. Squirtle dodged a sudden String Shot attack before executing a third and final Tackle attack. Then Squirtle returned to Carlotta's side and they continued on.
"Is that all you got?" a trainer from out of nowhere demanded. Carlotta and Squirtle turned to face the boy. A Rattata was sitting on either shoulder and a Pidgey was flying overhead. A Venonat was standing next to the trainer. "Ha! And I thought trainers from Pallet were supposed to be tough! Why don't you try your new pokemon out against mine, huh? I've been training for a while now, but I wanna know what it's like to train against a Pallet Town trainer!"
"You got it!"
Carlotta put the kickstand down on her bike and released her Krabby. It was weak, but she was going to heal it so that it could fight in this battle if need be.
"Go, Squirtle! You know what to do!"
Squirtle nodded.
"Squirtle!"
The cute little turtle stepped forward.
"You first, Ratbrain!"
Ratbrain? What a name for a pokemon, even if it is a Rattata! Geez...even I could've come up with a better name than that if I'd wanted to.
Carlotta gave her new Krabby a potion and it was as good as new. A Rattata leaped down from the boy's right shoulder and the battle began.
TRAINER STATS LV13 Rattata LV14 Rattata LV9 Pidgey LV12 Venonat
It tried to start off the battle with a Hyper Fang, but Squirtle dodged the attack and launched a Tackle against the Rattata. It went flying, but shook it off and surged forward. It was hit with a head-on Tackle before it could throw it off, but Squirtle was hit with a Quick Attack at the same time. It stumbled to its feet and was hit with another Quick attack, but then the Rattata tried a Hyper Fang attack again. Squirtle rolled out of the way and the Rattata landed flat on its face. Then it was hit from the side with a Tackle attack - and it was a critical hit! The Rattata was hurting now, and as it stumbled to its feet, it was hit with another Tackle - and then a third. A fourth Tackle, and then a final Tackle, finished it off. Squirtle, however, wasn't done; well, she was with the battle itself. But she'd gained so much experience that she'd grown to level six - and then to level seven! And she'd learned Bubble! She came over and got a potion from Carlotta, who congratulated her. Now it was time for the second fight, and she stepped up. The trainer was not pleased. It was surprising that Squirtle had survived at only level 5, but she was stronger now - if only by a little.
The next pokemon up was the Pidgey. It darted it with a Quick Attack immediately, and then landed and attacked with Gust while Squirtle was recovering. She got to her feet and dodged the next Gust attack as she launched a Bubble attack at the Pidgey. Squirtle halved the distance and then launched another Bubble attack against the Pidgey. Then it tackled the Pidgey and sent it flying. While it was still recovering, Squirtle launched two more consecutive Bubble attacks. Then it tackled the pokemon, and one last Bubble attack finished it off. Squirtle hadn't reached level 8, but she was just under the amount of experience needed to do so! The Pidgey, like the Rattata before it, was returned to its pokeball and Venonat was sent forward.
"Squirtle! Bubble attack!"
The Bubble attack was effective enough that the Supersonic attack never came - and wouldn't. Bubble after Bubble after Bubble was launched, one right after the other, so that Venonat wouldn't have a chance to attack. It did finally dodge one of them and got off a Supersonic attack, unfortunately. Carlotta used her voice to guide the confused pokemon away from the charging Venonat. As it leaped into the air, Carlotta ordered Squirtle to launch a bubble attack and it did so - and it hit! It knocked the Venonat right out of the air with a critical hit. It fell to the ground, unconscious - and Squirtle grew to level 8 immediately, but then it jumped to level 9!
Squirtle had a decent amount of HP to last another battle right now, but only because she'd grown four levels in this battle already. That was the power of a trainer's words, you see, but also the luck of a great pokemon! The Venonat was recalled and the second Rattata was sent out. Squirtle shook off her confusion just as she was hit with a Quick Attack. She hit the Rattata with a Bubble attack as she came up, slowing it down long enough for a second Bubble attack - and then a Tackle attack. The Rattata went flying. Two more Bubble attacks, and thetn a Tackle attack, weakened the Rattata. It came in with a Tackle attack of its own, but that was dodged and a Bubble attack finished it off. Squirtle then grew to level 10 and learned Withdraw!
The trainer recalled his Rattata. He was angry.
"Showoff! How could a pokemon that weak win against me! My name is Stewart Pettison, and you'll be hearing from me again, you little whelp! I'll show you! Next time, I'll win!"
And with that, he ran off. After he was out of sight, Carlotta rolled her eyes and said with a mocking smile, "Whatever you say, Stewie. I've gotta get you two to a Pokemon Center, though."
Instead, though, she headed back to Pallet. It was closer than Viridian and there was a Chansey at the Oak Pokemon Research Lab that could help out. Now that she'd wasted two potions, she'd have to buy some from Prof. Oak. She was a bit irritated with herself on that point - but it couldn't be helped now.

Upon returning to Route 1, Carlotta immediately stopped her bike as she'd spotted three Pidgey nearby. There were two real close to one another and another one a ways off. Since her Krabby was weak and couldn't face off against two Pidgey - odd that her Squirtle could, but she'd had faith in her; Krabby couldn't move the same way as Squirtle, though - Carlotta released her Krabby and sent it off to battle the lone Pidgey. Its Bubble attack hit the Pidgey hard, starting the battle off with a critical hit that cut its HP in half. As the Pidgey was recovering, it was hit with another Bubble. It managed to get into the air, though, and the next Bubble attack missed - unlike the Pidgey's Gust attack. Then the Pidgey landed and tried to stir up another Gust attack, but it was hit with a Bubble attack before it could. A final Bubble attack knocked it out.
"Nice work, Krabby!" Carlotta praised her.
She returned Krabby to her pokeball and rode off. It wasn't long before she stopped again to release Krabby. There was a Rattata darting along nearby. A quick Bubble attack got its attention. Another Bubble attack kept it from using a Tackle attack against Krabby, while a third kept it at bay further. It dodged another Bubble attack only to get hit with a fourth one. Finally, the Rattata closed the distance and was in the process of tackling Krabby when her next Bubble attack knocked the pokemon aside and out. It landed unconscious on the ground and Krabby grew to level 4! Carlotta praised her pokemon and was about to return it to its pokeball when another Rattata showed up.
"Finish that one off and I'll have a little snack for you, Krabby! Come to think of it, it's about lunch time now; I should eat something and feed my Squirtle, too..."
This Rattata dodged two Bubble attacks and got in a Tackle attack right away. Then it was hit with a Bubble attack and tackled Krabby in return. It managed to use Tackle again before being knocked away with another Bubble, and then being knocked out with one more.
"Yeah! Good going, Krabby! C'mere and get some food!" Carlotta said to her pokemon as she grinned happily. She released Squirtle as Krabby came over and she put the kickstand down on her bike. She pulled out some snacks for the pokemon and they began to eat happily. She also pulled out a snack for herself and sat cross-legged as she ate it.
"You girls looking forward to your first gym match?"
"Squirtle!"
"Krabby..."
Krabby wasn't so sure, it seemed.
"Don't worry, Krabby. You'll be battle-ready in no time. Besides, it won't be for a while. Viridian City's only gym is only for trainers that have gotten all seven other badges. We've gotta get there and then through the Viridian Forest, which is full of bugs, in order to get to Pewter City. That's where your first gym match will be, and it should be a cinch since the gym leader there uses rock types. Water'll crush 'em but good!"
Krabby seemed cheered after that, and they ate in silence together. When they were done, Carlotta collected the trash and put it into a roadside trash bin. There was a sign on the bin that said something about keeping the pokemon world clean and fit for human and pokemon life alike, but Carlotta hardly noticed; that was just common sense, after all. She returned her pokemon to their pokeballs and rode toward Viridian City on her bike...

As Carlotta was riding along, she happened to notice another Rattata along the road. It was with a trainer - not Stewie; Carlotta remembered the forced nickname with a laughing smile - but he did seem to be training his pokemon. She stopped the bike.
"Wanna match?"
She was just a few feet away from him now as he looked up, slightly surprised, and then grinned.
"Sure. Name's Dan, by the way. Go, Rattata!"
"I'm Carlotta. Go, Squirtle!"
"Carlotta's a pretty name. Maybe you're too pretty to be a pokemon trainer!"
"Ha! We'll just see!"
"Yeah, we will!"
And the battle began.
Squirtle started off the battle with a Bubble attack that was dodged and returned in kind with a Tackle. Squirtle staggered, but she got off another Bubble attack; this one hit and knocked the Rattata into a tree. Another Bubble kept it there, and then another, and another - and then it was unconscious. The Rattata was switched with a Pidgey.
"Darn it! You won't win against this pokemon!"
"Wanna bet?"
"Yeah! I'll give you $1000 if you win, but you have to give me $2000 if you lose!"
"Deal!"
And the second battle was on. Pidgey started the battle with a Gust attack, but Squirtle used Withdraw and the attack had no effect. Popping its head out, Squirtle made the Pidgey squawk as it was hit with a sudden Bubble attack. It got up only to get hit with another one, and then Squirtle rushed forward with a Tackle attack that knocked the Pidgey out.
"Grrr..." Dan growled as he recalled his Pidgey. "Then try this one!"
A Butterfree was released.
"Wow, you're Caterpie's already a Butterfree?"
"Yeah, level 12! So ha! You won't win this! I guarantee it!"
"It's really beautiful."
"Thanks! Now let's fight!"
"You got it!"
Butterfree started off by using Tackle, but the attack was dodged and a Tackle from Squirtle knocked it out of the air. A Bubble attack kept it on the ground and another Tackle helped to keep it there. Then the Butterfree was hit with two more Bubble-Tackle combos before it managed to get into the air once more and use Confusion. Using String Shot next, it then tackled Squirtle - who managed to get off a Bubble attack in retaliation. It was weak now, but still had a Bubble attack in it that sent the Butterfree spinning. Another one knocked it out and it fell to the ground unconscious.
"No!"
The battle was over. The Butterfree was recalled as Squirtle grew to level 12.
"So, I understand you have $2000 to pay me."
Too discouraged to realize the obvious bluff, the trainer handed his cash over without looking to see how much it was - $3450! this was way more than she'd been promised. She put it away and said, "Don't worry. Your Butterfree is strong. I'm sure you'll have no problem winning other matches with it. Good luck!"
With that and a congratulatory hug for the happily-accepting Squirtle, Carlotta returned her pokemon to her pokeball and rode off.
A few minutes later, she saw a Weedle sitting alongside the road. That was unusual. They didn't normally show up on this side of Viridian City. Still, a pokemon was a pokemon. Carlotta released Krabby and launched it into battle. It immediately hit the Weedle with a Bubble attack, and then another one, and just barely managed to dodge a Poison Sting - and then two more! Then it got off another Bubble attack only to be hit with a Poison Sting; it was just a nick and didn't poison the water pokemon, but that had been a close call. Two more quick, successive Bubble attacks finished the Weedle off. It had been strong - it raised Krabby to level 6 and taught her Leer! Congratulating Krabby on the victory, Carlotta returned her to her pokeball and rode into Viridian City at last...
